A grille is also the one exterior part where the customer looks at the surface from 300 mm, in daylight, at an angle that catches every ripple. That is why plating-grade tooling is specified backwards from the plating rack rather than forwards from the part drawing.

Because plating thickness follows current density, and current density follows geometry — a 0.1 mm gate vestige, a 0.3° polish dish or a weld line all change local current and leave a mark that survives every downstream process.
Five requirements decide whether the part plates clean. Grille tools sit at the extreme end of the Automobile Molds range: 20-plus slats, 1.2 mm fin edges, and an emblem recess that has to plate evenly at three depths.
| Gate type | Typical vestige | Acceptable on a plated grille? |
| Valve gate, pin cut flush | 0.02–0.05 mm | Yes, on the back face |
| Tunnel gate, auto-trim | 0.10–0.20 mm | Only behind a covered surface |
| Direct gate, manual trim | 0.15–0.30 mm | No |
| Hot tip, no pin | 0.10–0.15 mm | No |
Part geometry matters as much as steel. Radii under 0.5 mm burn at the edge because current crowds there, and any recess deeper than 15 mm plates thin at the bottom — the classic grey patch on a grille slat. Design those constraints in, and the plater stops returning parts. The substrate side fails the same way: a wet ABS shot gives silver streaks that no polish can prevent, which is also the first thing that rejects chrome-capped Home Appliance Parts such as knobs and handle trims.
✅ Bottom line: A plated grille is specified from the plating rack backwards; 0.05 mm of vestige is the whole tolerance budget.
S136 ESR at 48–52 HRC, polished in five steps to Ra 0.02 µm, with the gate block and emblem recess built as replaceable inserts — because a plating-grade cavity gets repolished every 100,000 shots, not repaired once.
Machine first, polish second, and never polish across a joint. A cavity assembled from inserts will show a step of 0.005 mm as a chrome ridge, so joints are lapped before the final compound and masked during it.
| Step | Compound | Target Ra | Check |
| 1 | 320 grit stone | 0.4 µm | Remove all EDM recast layer |
| 2 | 800 grit paper | 0.15 µm | Scratch pattern uniform, no cross-hatch |
| 3 | 1,200 grit + 6 µm diamond | 0.05 µm | No remaining pits under 10× loupe |
| 4 | 3 µm diamond | 0.02 µm | Gloss uniform, no dish at edges |
| 5 | 1 µm diamond, felt | ≤0.02 µm | Profile check on a 2D roughness tester |
Cooling has to be as even as the polish. Hold the cavity at 60–70 °C and keep the differential under 3 °C; a 5 °C band shows up as a gloss transition after plating that no amount of buffing removes. Run separate circuits for the slat cores and the emblem recess, and never share a circuit between a thin slat and the thick frame.
The same discipline applies to decorative trim outside the automotive world — Home appliance molds for chrome-look handles and control bezels run the identical five-step polish, because a plated appliance part is judged under the same 300 mm viewing distance.
Jusheng machines grille cavities from S136 ESR, cuts the slat cores on five-axis centres to hold wall thickness within 0.05 mm, and checks every insert joint on a CMM before polishing starts. Zhejiang Jusheng Intelligent Technology Co., Ltd. keeps gate blocks as replaceable inserts so a worn vestige is re-cut in days rather than re-cutting a 12 t cavity. That insert strategy is what makes a repolish at 100,000 shots an afternoon job instead of a rework project.
✅ Bottom line: Polish quality and insert strategy decide plating yield more than steel grade does; both are set before the first cut.
Q: How much does a chrome-plating-grade grille mold cost? A: A single-cavity plating-grade grille tool runs 45,000–95,000 from a China factory. SPI A-1 polishing plus S136 ESR adds 15–25% over a painted-part tool at the same size, and valve gating adds another 8–12%.
Q: Can an existing grille mold be fixed if the gate vestige is too high? A: Usually yes. We re-cut the gate insert, blend the vestige area by hand to under 0.05 mm and re-polish that zone. If the gate sits on a visible slat face, the insert gets relocated instead — polishing cannot hide a step that plating will find.
Q: How long does the build take? A: 12–16 weeks at Jusheng: 3 weeks DFM and flow analysis, 7–9 weeks machining and fitting, 3–4 weeks polishing, tryout and plating trials. Polishing alone takes 7–10 days on a grille with 20-plus slats.
Send the STEP file, the plating specification, the substrate grade and the visible-surface callout, and Jusheng returns a gate layout, polish plan and factory price within three working days. OEM and ODM programs include a first-article plating trial, so surface acceptance is settled on parts rather than on promises. Ask for the vestige budget before the cavity is cut — it is the one tolerance plating will not forgive.
